Information Management Lead

2022 ‐ 2023

5B (Sydney, NSW)

5B is a 200 employee strong high-growth tech startup in the renewable energy industry. It is a fast paced working environment in which I have thrived and grown both professionally and personally. Since been promoted to IM Lead, I have moulded, refined and matured how we work with information management within the company, making a substantial positive impact on the business in a short time. Drawing on over 18 years of experience in information management, document control, technical writing, and web development, I have successfully implemented robust frameworks and practices. This has streamlined processes, improved data accuracy, and enhanced collaboration across the company. This has been achieved by navigating complex regulatory landscapes, stakeholder relationships and requirements, and aligning information management strategies with business objectives. Key responsibilities, objectives and achievements in my current role as Information Management Lead at 5B:

  • Resolving internal communications challenges in a cost effective way by creating and deploying intranet portals and wikis using underutilised tools. This has transformed internal communications, that previously solely relied on an instant messaging application, which caused information overflow and data loss. The intranet portals have proven themselves highly valuable, not only for internal communications purposes in general, but also for the accelerated on-boarding of new starters, up-skilling of staff and retention of knowledge capital within the business despite a high staff turnover rate.
  • Automating error prone and tedious manual tasks by coding data and information utility apps and databases, leveraging both Google Workspace API services and other external APIs.
  • Delivering training and enablement workshops and populating the Knowledge Base with high quality training material, tutorials, and how-tos. This enables the Product Development Team to leverage the PDM/PLM system to its full potential.
  • Creation and custodial responsibility for a comprehensive Information Security Management framework. This includes an ISO 27001 compliant Information Classification and Data Protection Policy, information classification scheme, supporting documentation, procedures and guidelines. 5B is now implementing control objectives and mechanisms in our main cloud solution e.g. enforced DLP rules and metadata labels, derived from the framework.
  • Key stakeholder and consulted SME in multiple digital transformation initiatives (CRM, CMS, ERP, MES/MRP, PDM/PLM).
  • By means of effective organisational change management, I continue to support the company and help it embrace and adopt the IM frameworks that I have established.
  • In the current climate of emerging AI technologies, I have initiated a project in which I am exploring how these technologies, in conjunction with data warehousing, can be leveraged in a Knowledge Management context.

Senior Technical Writer

2021 ‐ 2022

5B (Sydney, NSW)

  • Planned, researched and produced high volumes of quality technical documentation for the manufacturing, assembly, logistics, deployment and operation & maintenance of 5B's innovative utility scale solar array solution.
  • Aligned the objectives and key results of the business with that of Technical Publications. Created a road-map for short, mid and long-term requirements, needs and goals for Technical Publications at 5B. Introduced a Project Model for collaborative, cross-disciplinary authoring of technical documentation.
  • Produced a comprehensive, ISO 9001 compliant content governance and document control framework encompassing end-to-end life-cycles, policies, processes & workflows, guidelines, Ways of Working & best practices, content models, templates and extensive supporting documentation.
  • Liaised with key stakeholders in the business, gained cross-departmental buy-in and built a strong business case for an enterprise grade, all-in-one DAM, CMS, CCMS and digital marketing tools system with headless content delivery capabilities.
  • Nominated Productivity Champion and helped roll-out and provide training for a cloud based collaborative work execution platform. I supported the business with insights, shared my knowledge, technical support and trained more than 40 people in the software.
  • Liaised with stakeholders and SMEs (Project Managers, Product Safety Expert, Process Engineers, Systems Engineers, Structural Engineers and Draftsmen) responsible for upstream deliverable interdependencies to spread awareness of flow-on effects and downstream reliance. Advocated strongly for Product Lifecycle Management and Product Portfolio Management, adopting ontological models & taxonomies, and New Product Development and NIP process frameworks.
  • Showcased how the power of Object Oriented Programming and the Document Object Model in conjunction with the SVG / XML format could enable creation of wiring schematics, diagrams and other visuals by means of automation as opposed to manual labor.

Technical Writer

2013 - 2021

Sandvik Mining (Newcastle, NSW)

As Technical Writer, my responsibilities included researching, planning, and producing end‐user documentation and training material for explosion‐protected loaders, haulers, miners, and bolters used in underground coal mining applications. On a regular basis, I produced technical bulletins targeting the Australian, African, and Asian markets with critical product information updates. Furthermore, I was the representative of our team and our product line, reporting to the Global Documentation Governance Council in weekly meetings with my peers from around the world. As such, I was directly involved in decision‐making that set the future standard for technical writing at Sandvik. I was also one of five administrators worldwide, as well as a key user, for the global CCMS system.

As a lifelong learner, I relish the chances I have to participate in ongoing skills training. In my time at Sandvik Mining I regularly mentored colleagues in structured information, single‐source authoring, and CMS migration. I developed a one‐week internal training course for SDL Tridion Docs, and subsequently trained the company’s APAC documentation team. I also fulfilled the roles of subject matter expert, advisor, and project facilitator in the global Digital Service Platform project.

Programmed data migration scripts to facilitate master data system migration, including utilizing machine learning technology in the form of an open source optical character recognition system, to accurately extract text from scanned documents.

Sourced, installed and showcased an open source e-commerce system, running on a WAMP stack, and how it had the potential to replace printed matter spare parts catalogues.

Passion Projects

The following projects illustrate my passion for visionary thinking outside of the box, in trailblazing what can be achieved with new technology. In each of the examples, I sought to fill a void and showcase the potential of innovative thinking by using and expanding the then-current application of the internet. I continue to look for areas in my work where these guiding principles of being at the forefront of clever application can be exploited.

Since 1999, Eliteprospects.com has been a highly reputable and well-recognized ice hockey site, featuring rich player and game statistics as well as news. With over one million unique visitors per week, Eliteprospects.com is considered as one of the greatest online resources for player scouts and ice hockey fans alike from all around the world.

I worked alongside Johan Nilsson, founder of Eliteprospects.com, over a period of two months. Our combined efforts then laid the foundation of what was to become the number one online hockey statistics website in the world. The website was completely revised from being a collection of thousands of static HTML files to a fully‐fledged hockey statistics database built on PHP/MySQL/JavaScript technology. Eliteprospects.com was acquired by Sportsverige.se in 2008 and today has offices in NYC, Tampa, and Växjö.

As a Web Developer, I programmed a social network platform: Efter studenten (direct translation: "After Graduation") from scratch using PHP/MySQL running on a LAMP stack. Efter studenten was exclusively available for approximately 20 people, my former high school classmates, and was created by me to provide a platform for us to stay in touch after graduation. This website had many features later to be seen in the early Facebook application such as photo sharing, wall posts, private messaging as well as a public discussion forum. Although this site was highly successful and used for several years, the Facebook boom in Sweden brought about its closure.

As a keen traveler, I documented my solo trip to Venezuela for my family and friends. It included daily updates (infrastructure permitting) of my activities and observations. It was during this trip I was made acutely aware of the environmental impact of humans on the marine ecosystem. This sparked my general concern for the issue of plastics in our oceans, an issue that I remain passionate about to this day.

mikaelkulig.com - a journey of exploration and discovery through the realms of open-source web technologies! As a keen enthusiast and a curious learner, I am inquisitive about the evolving landscape of web technologies. This website, and the server on which it is hosted, serves as a playground where I can experiment, explore, and learn about the many technical aspects of the World Wide Web, including but not limited to performance, security, analytics, networking, accessibility, and databases.

Hosted on a virtual private server at the cost equivalent of a cup of coffee per month, mikaelkulig.com is more than just a digital presence; I have undertaken the challenge of optimising its performance, striving for nothing less than top score ratings across the most recognised website validation, performance and vulnerability evaluation tools available.
